What Did I Do in June?

Well, July has flown by, but I realized I didn't post anything here for June! Here's what I was up to:

Hand-lettered Invitations and More for a Wellness Retreat

This picture was a quick mockup of what user-generated content could look like for health and wellness influencers attending the event. Ironically I was in Mexico and put this flat lay together on my hotel bed. To be honest, I've been phasing out of at least modern calligraphy style lettering for a while now, but this was a fun project to add some human touch to with some free-spirited printing and flowy cursive.

Went to Yosemite for the First Time

As a California native, it's really a shame I hadn't been here sooner, but I made it with family and friends who are like family. It was grand.

Stumbled Upon the First Dim Sum House in the U.S.

This was completely by accident, as I was convinced there were no sit-down dim sum restaurants in San Francisco via majorly surface-level Yelp search. Hang Ah Dim Sum House has been around since 1920 and their address is pretty cool: 1 Pagoda Place in Chinatown.

Illustrated for Yellow Co.

I also began writing for Yellow! My first posts came out in July, but these published in June for an article on body image.

Celebrated my Grandma's 92nd? Birthday

We honestly can't be 100% sure of how old she is because of conflicting documents... My grandma has Alzheimer's and has her on days, but mostly, well, off. Though she can't stand and cook a meal, or entertain very long conversation, when she recognizes family, she'll insist in Cantonese, "You'll stay for dinner right?" I swear she doesn't actually forget me by the way she holds my hand.

This birthday was really special to be with her on an "on" day, when she knew it was her birthday and that family was there to celebrate her.

I also happened to have a sketchbook with me. She wanted to see. I don't really expect elderly people to be that into my digital works (I don't know??), so it was really special to me for her to enjoy seeing my original sketches, test prints and final portraits for Darling Issue 24, which just came out.

"Don't let it be too long until you visit next," she said. I really don't think she forgets.

Went to the Huntington Library and Gardens

In June, I was doing all of this reading on Nasa JPL, and was beyond stoked to get to see and hear the Orbit Pavilion here!

We also went to an English Tea House which was really lovely and run by an adorable couple who have been running the tea service and gift shop for 40 years. When the husband heard I was a writer, he said, "Well, we certainly have a story here don't we!"

Cut My Hair and Prepped to Visit Italy and Austria!

Ah ok yes, my hair is cut in the previous picture as well.

I would end this by saying that July is where the real fun of the summer has been, but looking back on all June held... it was pretty great!
